Named after one of the earliest micro-breweries founded in the Rancho Bernardo-Carmel Mountain neighborhood which unfortunately has been shuttered, this populaire is an excursion to Ramona and San Diego Country Estate.
Starting from Epic Wings, you’ll warm up by spinning down Pomerado Rd. Not far after crossing Poway Rd, you’ll turn left to start the climb up Stowe Rd as the teaser. You’ll connect up to Scripps Poway Parkway for the next climb. Considered the “Torrey Pines” of the east, SPP as it is affectionately abbreviated is a 1.8 mile hustle up to Hwy 67. On the highway to Ramona, you’ll continue what seems like steps in a staircase up toward Mt Woodson. At the top, you can see the marine layer still blanketing over Poway and other low-lying communities of San Diego.
Passing the Mt Woodson trailhead as you bomb down the highway from the summit, you’ll reach the outskirts of Ramona town center where you’ll turn onto Dye Rd, the land of “Chicken Run”. Don’t get too eggs-cited by the eggs-traodinary Happy Hens Farm that you’ll pass as you proceed down another descent on San Vicente Rd, arriving in San Diego Country Estate.
You can either stop at the Country Village Store or the Hummingbird Coffee Hut for some refreshments before you start climbing your way up on Vista Ramona Rd to return to Ramona. A third of your ride through town will be on “D” St followed before getting back on Main St.
Turning right on Highland Valley Rd, you’ll ride pass the Ramona Grasslands Preserve before descending down to San Pasqual Valley on Bandy Canyon Rd, speeding by various wineries, several citrus orchards and a dragon fruit farm. At the bottom of Bandy Canyon you’ll connect up to Hwy 78 and then Old San Pasqual Rd to make your way to Bear Valley Rd in Escondido. Back in Rancho Bernardo, you’ll ride out to Mostra Coffee in 4S Ranch. A short jaunt on Camino Del Norte and you’ll be back to Epic Wings for the post-populaire food and libation.
Bathrooms are available at Mostra Coffee or in Home Depot.
