Starting from Ocotillo, you will start climbing on Sweeney Pass Road until you connect up to the Great Southern Overland Stage Route. After Banner Grade, you continue on San Felipe Road until you reach Montezuma-Borrego Highway, arriving at Ranchita and the world famous statue of the Abominable Snow Man in front of the Montezuma Valley Market. You will return on the same road back to Ocotillo, this time descending most of the way the finish.
Along the way, you’ll see the desert landscape of rocks, sand, ruts and cacti on both sides of the road. Tall ocotillos stand as sentries guarding the road as you pass by. The impression of barrenness and lifelessness belie the sublime beauty of the roughhewn washes and canyons covered with flora and fauna that flourish in this harsh environment.
While pedaling, you share the same road that many other historic luminaries have traveled on, most notably Mark Twain and his brother Orion rode when when they travelled on their way to Nevada, as documented in his book “Roughing It.” Whereas their stage coach was a “swinging and swaying cage”, “an imposing cradle on wheels,” you’ll have the comfort of paved roads to keep your ride as smooth as possible.
