A venture to South Bay in search of honey and a little more elevation gain.

This route was first created as a permanent in 2008, still in existence (permanent #450), and first ridden as a brevet in 2012. Randonneurs were tougher back then and the route was longer and had more elevation than this current iteration.

It remains a reasonably challenging endeavour with 8300ft of elevation for 200km.

Starting in University City, the route route will take riders south to Chula Vista via the familiar Rose Canyon bike path and downtown San Diego. It will then head east to Otay Lake, leaving suburbia behind and entering the scenic backcountry.

At km 75, the Pio Pico Country store will be the last opportunity to refuel before the profile becomes interesting.

Riders will then confront the pièce de résistance of this route, the 11km ascent along Honey Springs Rd. Then it’s a few rollers to Crest via Japatul and Alpine where the contrôle happens to be at the best Carl’s Jr in the county.

Then it’s back in suburbia to return to the start via Santee, Tierrasanta, Mira Mesa and University City.

This ride is unsupported.
