With the Race Across America kicking off in June, this populaires celebrates this ultra-distance cycling event by riding on a mini-micro- almost nano portion of the 3000-mile hell on two wheels challenge. This year we are honored and excited that Mr John Marino, founder of RAAM and current RUSA member with 3 K-Hounds under his belt, will be the ride leader.
Starting from Rouleur Brewing in Carlsbad, you’ll ride down to the coast to the Oceanside Pier, where the race starts. Jumping on to the San Luis Rey bike path, you’ll follow the parade start portion of the race route, making your way to Mance Buchanon Park. The “official” race course begins on College Blvd, climbing Sleeping Indian. To avoid the traffic on Old Castle Rd to Valley Center Rd, this populaire will climb Circle R Rd, followed by W Lilac Rd and Lilac Rd before rejoining the RAAM route where Old Castle Rd merges and becomes Lilac Rd. You can endeavor to hammer and race this section of the populaire route, Whereas the RAAM racers will turn left on Valley Center Rd to continue to Atlantic City, New Jersey several days later for the finish, you’ll make a right to descend down to Escondido and back to Rouleur for food and beer with John who will recount his war stories of RAAM.
Though this populaire will conform to standard RUSA rule regarding the order of finish by last name for the overall event, there will be a “race” element in the route for those who opt to take part for prizes. The Race route will begin at teh start of Camino Del Rey after crossing Hwy 76 and ends the lefthand turn where Old Castle Rd becomes Lilac Rd. A Strava segment will be created to record the race finish times of participants on the day. Details will be provided as we are close to the start of the event.
On Tuesday, June 11, RAAM solo and RAW (Race Across the West) racers will start their epic endeavor from the Oceanside Pier, followed by the team start on Saturday, June 15.
