The 15th annual running of Rainbow 200k to start our ACP Super Randonneur Series (SR Series).
Starting from University City’s Doyle Park, you’ll descend down Torrey Pines to the Penasquitos Creek estuary, turning inland riding along the rolling terrain through Rancho Santa Fe for a good warm up.
On Del Dios Hwy you’ll start the first climb to Escondido, riding by Lake Hodges Dam and the reservoir. After a respite on Harmony Grove/Elfin Forest, you’ll climb up Twin Oaks Valley Rd to reach the north inland community of San Marcos. After descending down Old Hwy 395 and passing Lawrence Welk Resort, you’ll start your third climb up Circle R Rd.
Rolling along the picturesque West Lilac Rd and Lilac Rd, riding by the Yellow Deli which never seems to be open and the Lavendar Farm, the top of Couser Canyon Rd is guarded by a steep but short ascent. The reward for the arduous effort is a scenic descent down the winding road partially covered by overhanging avocado trees followed by the green pastures in the San Luis Rey River valley where you’ll see cattle grazing on verdant pasture. Crossing Hwy 76, you’ll reach the “dreaded” Rice Canyon climb: dreaded because after you summit and find relief as you descend, that joy is short-lived as another climb slaps you in the face until you come to Rainbow.
After a short or extended recovery at the Rainbow control, you’ll tmake your way to the eastern outskirts of Fallbrook to enjoy the extended downhill on Live Oak Park Rd to Winterwarm before connecting up to Hwy 76. At Mance Buchanon Park, you’ll continue on the San Luis Rey Bike Trail. Expect a respectable amount of headwind on your way out to Oceanside where you can pick up a prevailing though not guaranteed tailwind as you ride south along the coast, reaching Torrey Pines for the final climb.
At the finish Tim will welcome you with his usual Celtic joviality accompanied by snacks and refreshments.
Make sure to enter the park at the Regents Rd entrance where you can park your vehicle. Public bathrooms are available in the park.
