NOTE: Route has been changed through Vista/San Marcos!
The Santiago Canyon 400k brevet is a scientific endeavor to create a flattish 400k flattish route in starting and finishing in San Diego County that:
- Has the least amount of climbing
- Has longish stretches sans traffic lights
The first loop, as the ride title strongly suggests, is a trip up to OC to ride through Santiago Canyon during the daytime hours to see the splendor of the landscape through what would be rural and untamed in that urbanized county. You’ll pass through quaint Trabuco Canyon and the equally vintage general store where you can refuel and refill. The return to the coast will be down San Juan Creek bike trail.
In either direction you will need to ride on Interstate 5 unless you have a base pass which right now may not guarantee access due to our activities in the Persian Gulf region.
Back in San Diego, the ride east on San Luis Rey bike path to Vista and San Marcos is distance filler on what would hopefully be flattish roads back to Encinitas. You will need to check in at the control. Food and drinks will be provided but be ready to move out soon as the longer you linger, your butt will grow roots and you may be tempted to become a DNF statistic.
The southern Airport loop is purely distance filler miles on flat roads except for that little bump called Torrey Pines. There will be traffic, lights and depending on the time of night, post bar closure traffic. However, any other direction that is less populated will entail some amount of rolling terrain leading to more climbing, which this route is trying to avoid. Returning through La Jolla, you’ll make that final assault up La Jolla Shores Dr. The Cardiff Kook will welcome you back to the finish either in darkness or at dawn.
