New route designed by Tim S.
This new 300k is the Tour de Lake Elsinore, starting with the inland trek along the Avocado Freeway (aka Interstate 15) along Old 395 with the return leg down the coast back to Liberty Station.
The start will require navigating through San Diego’s urban setting at dawn through Linda Vista and Kearny Mesa. While traffic will be light, traffic lights may slow you down until reaching MCAS Miramar. From that point on the route north will be a mix of urban and rural cycling.
Along your way up to Lake Elsinore, you’ll need to negotiate over several climbs. None are over 2 miles, but collectively, they stand in your quest to finish this brevet as your legs will feel the accumulated effort over these climbs.

Approaching the turnaround control at McVicker Canyon Park, you’ll follow along the northeastern shore of the lake, passing Diamond Stadium where the Lake Elsinore Storm, the Padres Single A minor league baseball team, play their home games during the season. After the turnaround, you’ll take the southwestern route through Eastland Village to retrace the route with several diversions to avoid Old Town Temecula.
After cresting at Rainbow when you to San Diego County, the ride down to Hwy 76 will be an extended descent. While 76 and San Luis Rey bike trail are generally flat, you might face a steady headwind if you arrive before sunset. At Oceanside you’ll follow the usual coastal route until Torrey Pines, where you’ll turn inland on Carmel Valley Rd to take the UCSD bike path and then Genesee Ave through University City to return to Mission Bay for the final dash back to Liberty Station.

All participants are required to follow RUSA’s nighttime reflectivity rules as summarized on the FAQ page (Frequently Asked Questions – SD Randos).
