To change our sugar rush route a little, this year randos will seek out donut shops and bakeries to in East County.
Leaving University City’s Golden Donut, you’ll ride south on the Genesee Ave roller coaster to burn take out some of those stored calories to stop at Rose Donuts in Morena neighborhood.
Not to linger for too long to jack up your blood sugar, you’ll start your trek east along the San Diego River, climbing out of the river valley on Montezuma Rd, passing San Diego State toward Mt Helix. After a short stint on a couple of commercial areas, you’ll enter La Mesa and pass Helix High School, noted for its famous alums such as the actor Dennis Hopper and professional athletes such as the late Bill Walton, Reggie Bush and Alex Smith.
You’ll reach the foot of Mt Helix on Lemon Ave, taking the Alto Dr approach to really make room for the additional donuts that will be forthcoming. A quick photo of the panoramic view at the summit by the amphitheater, you’ll arrive at Best Donuts to recover from the climb.
Riding through El Cajon, you’ll jump on the Forester Creek bike path through Santee to reach Eccentric International Chef. If you a donut purist, then Mary’s Donuts and Coffee is just a couple doors down.
Making your way west, you’ll need to negotiate over the Mission Trail Summit on the 52 bike path to Tierrasanta, stopping at Tasty Donuts for a post climb recovery before pushing on through Miramar to arrive at 85°C Bakery in Mira Mesa. Taking Calle Cristobal down to Sorrento Valley, you’ll take the UCSD bike path back to Genesee Ave for the final stretch back to University City.
