400km/14400ft ACP Brevet

Next installment of our SR series during the (R)Ides of March.

This new 400k route, designed by Tim S, will take you on an adventure to Campo in the east and Bonsall to the north, finishing with a night ride down the coast. It is the Lite version of “I Have Reservations 600k” as you will pass by several Kumeyaay reservations, reaching the Campo Band Diegueño Mission Indians. On your way to Campo, you’ll ride through Mission Valley and El Cajon in the early mornings before reaching Dehesa Rd which is part of the Great Western Loop followed by Viejas Grade for a little dirt fun.

After a stop at the Golden Acorn Travel Center, your westward journey will be on Campo Rd. At the intersection where you’ll pass the Campo Green Store in historic Campo is the road leading to the southern terminus of the iconic Pacific Crest Trail by the US-Mexico border. As you speed past Campo Creek Vineyards, you’ll be the closest to the border as the barrier is in sight on your left. You’ll make a turn onto Otay Lakes Rd to re-enter San Diego’s urban setting after passing the reservoir.

After reaching Pier 32 but the San Diego Bay in National City, you’ll start your trek north. To mix things up a bit, this brevet will avoid the dreaded “downtown” by routing you to the recently completed Pershing Dr bikeway through the eastern portion of Balboa Park where you’ll pass the world-famous San Diego Velodrome where several SD Randos take part the Tuesday Night Racing (TNR) for pros and Friday Night Racing (FNR) for beginners. After the dip into Mission Valley followed by the climb out Serra Mesa, you’ll venture through various Inland North County neighborhoods of Escondido, San Marcos and Vista before reaching Bonsall. Unlike the loop out to Campo, the ride to Bonsall is urban.

From Bonsall, you’ll head west to Oceanside along the San Luis Rey River Trail. After topping off your water bottle and a snack, you’ll ride south along the coast to reach Liberty Station for the finish.

The start will be at the parking lot in front of Homewood Suites in Liberty Station near the USS Recruit. Public parking is available in the lot by the hotel. Other public parking lots in Liberty Station are open to parking.

All participants are required to follow RUSA’s nighttime reflectivity rules as summarized on the FAQ page (Frequently Asked Questions – SD Randos) as riding before sunrise at the start and after sunset is expected.
