For students and parents of students who survived California primary education, mission history is a major component when learning about the Golden State’s history. It is purported that the missions were established so that each was just far enough to reach in a day on horseback, as if they were controls. However romantic, the myth of the 1-day travel was the creation of the Automobile Association of Southern California during the early 20th century to entice Californians to buy cars and visit these “historic” locations.
As the pièce de résistance, the pinnacle of our Super Randonneur Series, this point-to-point 600km brevet reimagine how to appreciate not just these missions, but all points of interest along the course, on our bicycles in the company of friends. Starting from Santa Maria, the route will take you to 9 missions starting from La Purissima in Lompoc in southern portions of San Luis Obispo County to the original site of Mission San Diego in San Diego County. You’ll ride through 6 coastal counties in all. You’ll see the rolling green hills and vineyards of the Central Coast, the vast fruit orchards along the Santa Clara River valley, the urban hustle and bustle at the foot of the Angeles Mountains and finally the laid-back beach communities of Southern California.
To follow this mission route, you’ll need to ride through urban communities. If you are looking for majestic nature with nary a human traffic ornamentation to hinder your ride, this 600k is not for you.
There is a 30-rider cap for this brevet. If interest exceeds limit, you will be placed on the waiting list.
There is no refund. If a waiting list is established, we can work something out the rider who is still interested.
