This is a point-to-point “burrito” Western starting from Old Town San Diego, finishing in Yuma, AZ.

ADVISORY: This route will require you to ride on sections of Interstate 8. The prevailing wind is west to east, but excepts have occurred…

You’ll start east on this trek through Mission Valley, Santee then Lakeside following the San Diego River. Reaching Olde Hwy 80, you’ll leave the urban sprawl of San Diego County behind you and make your long and extended climb through the Laguna Mountains.

At Alpine, you’ll enter the Viejas reservation to climb Viejas Grade. This road is dirt through a remote part of the county with very few cars. At the top, a generous local has a water fountain set up to top off your bottle. Descending to Descanso, you’ll pick up Olde Hwy 80 again, riding through Guatay and Pine Valley.

At Laguna Junction where Olde Hwy 80 and Sunrise Hwy (S1) meet, you’ll start an extended downhill to Cameron Corner near Campo where you’ll then climb up to Boulevard before another descent to Jacumba. Riding toward Valley of the Moon and the Desert Tower, you’ll need to jump on I-8 on an extended downhill toward Ocotillo. At mile 103 you’ll take the exit to merge onto Hwy 98, leaving the mountains behind with the wide-open desert before you that is flat with the wind from the west over the mountain pushing you further east.

Entering Imperial County, you’ll need to stop at the Ocotillo Chevron to fill up water bottles and take in calories as convenient stores becomes fewer and far between. On Hwy 98, you’ll ride through the bustling border town of Mexicali. Keep in mind that the next available water stop will be 50 miles further at the Sidewinder Chevron near the state border.

Leaving Mexicali, you’ll return to the desert into the Imperial San Dunes: ever changing landscape of lines and curves shaped and formed by the wind. The majestically sublime desolation of the dunes will be slightly disturbed by the less than desirable pavement beaten and broken by the unforgiving and unrelenting heat of the desert sun.

Crossing the Colorado River, you’ll enter Arizona and reach the finish at the Radisson Hotel Yuma.

This brevet is unsupported. You will need to be self-sufficient, including your return trip San Diego. You will need to book your own room at the Radisson or any motel you’d like. If you book early, you can rent a one-way car through Avis at the Yuma International Airport. Another option is to have a significant other to drive out and bring you back from Yuma.
