Had too much turkey? One too many slices of pie? Stuffed on stuffing?

On Thanksgiving Saturday we’ll head off into the mountains to burn off those unwanted calories before they become permanent fixtures on our bodies by challenging ourselves to a good day of climbing Palomar Mountain.

Starting from Funner, California (aka Harrah’s Resort parking lot behind the Rincon Travel Center), you’ll immediately start your climb about a mile on Valley Center Rd to Hwy 76 where you’ll continue to climb to the start of South Grade. After a solid 4,520 ft of elevation gain to reach the Palomar Mountain General Store, you’ll enjoy an 11-mile respite descending down East Grade to return to 76. With an optional stop at the Lake Henshaw Store, you’ll ride further down the highway before turning onto Mesa Grande Rd. A “short” climb onto the plateau, you’ll negotiate over the gentle rollers riding by pastures dotted with grazing cattle until descending down to Hwy 79. A short jaunt down the road and you’ll reach Santa Ysabel and the Julian Pie Company to have another slice of pie at your choosing. If you are exhausted on pies, there are Don’s Market and Dudley’s Bakery.

The return route is simply to retrace the same roads that took you out to the turnaround point except you’ll be climbing Mesa Grande and then East Grade. After a quick check in at the general store if necessary, you will be rewarded with a 13-mile descent to the finish at Funner.

Will cancel this populaire if rain is in the forecast.
