San Diego Creek is in fact NOT in San Diego, like Mission San Jose is NOT in San Jose.
This breezy 200k is a trek up to Orange County to explore some of the bike trails in Newport Beach and Irvine which will include the Back Bay Trail along the shores of Newport Bay to the Mountain to the Sea Trail and the San Diego Creek Trail.
Just a little over the midpoint of the brevet is the Paris Baguette bakery which in fact is a Korean bakery chain specializing in Asian savory pastries and breads in addition to traditional Western sweet pastries.
You’ll wind your way on San Diego Creek trail until Bake Pkwy where you’ll start your climbing through Laguna Woods and Laguna Hills before descending down to San Juan Capistrano where you’ll pick up the San Juan River trail back to the coach. Be forewarned that temperature by midday will be warm through the Lagunas before returning to the seaside at Doheny State Beach. The return journey will follow the same roads that you took northbound.
If you don’t have the base pass required to access Camp Pendleton, you will need to ride on I-5 in both directions.
