50 years ago, Don Shanahan and his “crazy idea” to tag on a bike race onto a swim/run event became reality on September 25, 1974 at Mission Bay and Fiesta Island. Who knew that the triathlon that they thought wouldn’t go anywhere evolved and grew to become a $1.9 billion global endurance event category.
To celebrate, we’ll head down to the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center to stretch our legs before heading back to Mission Bay to retrace the original racecourse on and around Fiesta Island. From various accounts, the bike portion was the half loop of the island. To simulate the run, the route follows the multi-use path along the eastern shore of the bay. We’ll finish at Stone Brewing to gulp down a pint or two of our favorite beverages and call that the swim.
