For this year’s Halloween, SD RANDOS will get on our bikes to seek the various places alleged to be “haunted” by paranormal activities.

Starting from Blind Lady Ale House in “Para” Normal Heights, you’ll head out to Old Town with its plethora of haunted places including the Whaley House and El Campo Sancto on San Diego Ave. As a true Navy town with our nautical connections, you’ll ride down Harbor Dr to pass “haunted” ships such as the steamboat Berkeley, the Star of India and the USS Midway.

Riding through the Gaslamp District, you’ll encounter more “haunted” places such as the Horton Grand Hotel and the Davis-Horton House, both on Island Ave.

Continuing east, you’ll pass Mt Hope Cemetary. Famous San Diegans such as Alonzo Horton and Kate Sessions found eternal rest there. Another notable literary personality is Raymond Chandler who was renowned for his detective novels such as “The Big Sleep” with the immortal private detective, Phillip Marlowe, played by Humphrey Bogart.

Continuing east, you’ll finally break away from the shackles of urban traffic to reach the pièce de résistance of the populaire, “Proctor Valley Road”. Numerous urban legends detail monster sightings and other dreaded hauntings along this quiet road which is unpaved through the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. For more stories, here’s a link on the history of Proctor Valley Road stories Proctor Valley Road: The history behind the ghost stories.

Returning to civilization at Rancho San Diego, you’ll make your way through El Cajon and San Carlos to reach Mission San Diego. Though not HAUNTED!, you’ll reach the grave of Father Luis Jayme who died during the Kumeyaay uprising of 1775.

For the finish, you’ll return up I-15 bike path to Blind Lady Ale House for a wide selection of beverages and food for the treat of day. Unless you plan to do wheelies, no tricks are anticipated during this populaire.
